First We Feast Debuts ‘That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It!’ Web Series Starring Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, food-meets-pop-culture blog, First We Feast launched its first official web series, “That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It!” starring Dogfish Head Craft Brewery founder and president, Sam Calagione. The six-episode series follows “fearless brewer,” Calagione as he makes, well, “odd” and inventive beers with a selection of pop icons spanning a variety of creative industries. In every episode, Calagione and each of his collaborators—be they musicians, comedians or GQ’s 2015 best new menswear designers—make effective use of their respective trades to brew up something truly original.

Episode one kicks off in Chicago with a visit to Eataly‘s Mario Batali, where the famed chef and Calagione create the beer premier: WasteNot, a hybrid hefeweizen-“pruno” style which utilizes rotten fruits and other available ingredients, inspired by the makeshift wines of prisoners. The strange beer, which I was able to taste at the season premiere at Eataly’s Birreria in New York, follows the backbone of a German wheat beer (Munich malts, fruity esters) and features some interesting flavors (namely,  the “rotten grapefruit” and “overripe tomatoes”) combining into a classic prison wine with a Dogfish twist. The beer not only stands out with its unique flavors, it also supports wastED, a worthy cause to fight food waste spearheaded by Blue Hill chef and co-owner, Dan Barber.

“That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It!” kicks off with Mario Batali and his WasteNot recipe.

Stay tuned for more insights into the series gleaned from my conversation with Calagione coming out next week. While you’re waiting, watch the first episode here.
